THOMAS MAKINS Obituary

Mr. Thomas "Cal" Makins Jr age 49 passed peacefully away on Sunday, March 8th, 2026, at his residence located in Simpsonville, SC.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, George W. Makins Sr., Ora L. Makins, Irene Garrett Hunter, and Port Royal Garrett Jr.; his aunts, Veronica A. Makins and Felicia Garrett Smith; and his uncle, Kalim Al Wajid.

Cal is survived by his long-term partner, Tate Schabot; his parents, Thomas “Cal” Makins Sr. and Carla Makins; his sister, Crystal Wilson (Gabe); and his nephews, TJ, Trent, and Trey Wilson. He is also survived by his aunts, Sonya Garrett and Beverly Irby (Jerry).

Born July 5, 1976, in Greenwood, South Carolina, Cal lived a life defined by connection, laughter, and a heart that always seemed to have room for one more person. To know Cal was to feel welcomed. He truly never met a stranger, and those who crossed his path quickly discovered that friendship with him came easily—and often felt like family.

Music was one of Cal’s great joys. He loved concerts, the energy of a crowd, and the shared experience of a song that brought people together. At home, his cats held a special place in his heart. He loved them like children, caring for them with the same affection and devotion he gave to the people he loved most.

His partner Tate and his family meant everything to Cal—not just the family he was born into, but the family he built along the way. His warmth and loyalty created a circle of people who knew they always had a place with him.

Cal’s “chosen family” held a profound place in his life. He is survived by his sisters, Melissa Ellis and Gina Banks; his nephews, Skyler and Collin Ellis; and a host of other family members and friends too numerous to mention but deeply cherished.

Cal was the light and energy of every room he entered. His laughter was unmistakable, his kindness effortless, and his presence unforgettable. The world simply felt brighter when Cal was in it.
